I don't call it anything. I just toss it.
I've always called it the heel.
Yeah, heel, or just end piece. Crust is the brown on the top and sides.

It's the heel, and I prefer it, especially on French bread
Heel for me too. I only keep it in the bag to protect the next piece from going stale fast
The heel. I use two of them as a hamburger bun. 
I call it the end piece of bread.
I do that too. I worked in a restaurant years ago and used to save them for a coworker. When he went on break and ordered breakfast he always wanted the heels for his toast because they hold more jelly.

I'm doubting myself because the heel, the end, and the crust all sound right and I'm not sure which one is my natural vernacular.
