Putting my cats up for adoption

If I had my wish I would just keep my cats and love them all like I do now. Of course it is kitten season and I already have 17. We have

to many for our fixed income and our local shelter is over crowed and can not take in more. I want the best care for them they all have wonderful and loving personalities, I have older cats only one kitten from last year.

some of them are Hemingway cats with the extra toes. They are very enjoyable to watch and love to be lap cats. I really do not know

where to turn next if anyone has ideas please send me a message. My husband is not a real cat person so its really difficult to pass

You didnt state your location so I'm assuming it's somewhere in the U.S.  In addition to networking with family, friends, and co-workers, good places to try to place cats are through vets offices and eBayclassified.com.  While some people use Craig’s list, I have heard too many horror stories about the sort of people who look for animals there so I personally will not use it.   The eBay Classifieds ads come up with most recent first, so you do have to delete the old ones and put in new every week if you want to be high up on the list unless you have a special breed or color someone may be searching for.

Also, on Facebook there is a place called RescueMe.org which many people have had good luck with.  It costs nothing to write an ad and post pictures.  It helps if your cats are a particular color or breed because people may be looking for exactly that color or breed. You can certainly list the Hemingway cats as Hemingway cats.  Also on Facebook there is a group called Underground Railroad Rescued Kitty Network (URRKN for short) which is a volunteer group that gets adopted kitties to their new homes in a pony express type manner, where each volunteer drives a leg and passes the cat to the next volunteer etc.  Overnights are arranged if it's a long journey.  All the drivers are experienced cat people.  The person receiving the cat has to join URRKN but there's no charge to join, although it's nice if everyone offers to drive a leg in their area if they are ever needed.  That widens the area you can adopt to if you get really good applicants.

Always charge a small fee to weed out people who might be looking to use the cats for bad purposes or who are not serious about owning a cat.  Before placing the cats, be sure to speak to the people who want to adopt them.  If you find someone, it is better for the cats if you take them to the new home rather than have people take them from you.  Cats do not embrace change, and they will do best if they are given a room of their own with their food & litter in it and given time to adjust to a new family.  Just bringing in a new cat and expecting it to be comfortable with the new family can make for instant failure.  Before placing the cats, you should have a decent length talk with them and at a minimum cover the topics of why they want the cats, if they have had cats or other pets before, if so, if they still have those pets and if not what happened to them. If they do still have the pets, how they plan to introduce them to the new kitten, who their vet is or was, who is in their household other than them (kids? significant others?), their views on declawing (that would be traumatic for your cats), and what might cause them to give up the cats in the future, etc.
