Hi guys,

My kitty has a history of cystitis caused by stress....I am not sure what stressed her out the last time this happened, but I am a bit concerned that it might happen again because our upstairs neighbour just got a new puppy. All of the puppy sounds are really making her on edge.

Is there anything we should do to try making her feel like she's safe and ok? I might get some feliway for around the house. Other than that and just acting like everything is normal, I don't have any other ideas. Do you?!

Thanks :)

Feliway may help, but so could a competing sound.  There is a wonderful CAT PURR GENERATOR available for FREE online and you could leave that running on a phone or laptop.  If the puppy is just too loud, yuo could leave a TV on Animal Planet or something natural to drown it out.  Here is a link to the cat purr generator (there are several out there but this is the one I like)

The other thing you need to do is make sure she has a proper diet so her urine will stay acidic and thus cannot form any struvite crystals to irritate it.  Stress is known to make the urine more alkaline and thus more prone to forming crystals.  Simply put, a cat's diet should be animal protein, fat, and 10% or less carbohydrates, just as it would be in the wild.  This produces a healthy acidic urine. We have some great information on our NUTRITION thread where you can learn about lots of different diets that will be good for your cat.  http://www.thecatsite.com/f/64/cat-nutrition
