Is it ok to give just one dose to see how my cat reacts to the meds? Or is it one of those, once you start you cant stop, meds?

I'd call the vet and ask. Generally once you start giving pred, you can't stop cold turkey. You have to gradually decrease the dose and then stop.

If you worry about a reaction, ask the vet if you can start at a low dose, say half a pill for a week before increasing.
