My male cat has always had urinary iasues and two days ago I discovered he was blocked we caught it early rushed him to emergency vet. They put a catheter in and kept him for about 72 hours. Today when they tried to remove the catheter they said it was incredibly difficult to pull out but finally got it out. We just got him home and he ate some food and drank a fair amount of water and he keeps trying to pee but nothing comes out he's been home for about 4 hours. My wife is hysterical and basically on the verge of a nervous break down I work 90 hours a week and just came home. The emergency vet cost me 1500 I'm a blue collar working man that was my savings for last few months. Please tell me what to do is the cat gonna start peeing normal again in a few hours do I take him back to the vet I'm not rich please help

Hi! I'm sorry to hear this, and also that you didn't get a reply from any TCS members yesterday.
How is your kitty today? Is he peeing yet? Can you, if you haven't already, call your vet and discuss what's happening?

Hi again, something else you might consider would be to have several water bowls throughout the house, cleaned and changed daily, of filtered water if possible, unless your municipal water treatment is quite good. If you use a filter pitcher, just be sure to deep clean it regularly to avoid buildup.

Also, if you aren't already, try feeding your cat canned food. There are relatively inexpensive options/brands at Walmart, local grocery stores and also Tractor Supply (regular stores and online).

A can or two a day, or even every other day, can help because the moisture content in canned food is higher than in dry kibble food.

I'm so sorry you're going through all this. I've gone through a very similar ordeal. My cat just had PU surgery early December. He came home and immediately was unable to pee properly still. Just tiny drips came out, never a normal stream of urine.. It stayed this way and we had 3 vets tell us it was fine and nothing was wrong. Finally went to a specialist, and they told us that he strictured over, and needed another PU surgery to fix it... I honestly believe my first vet didn't do the surgery amazingly, as he was NEVER able to pee after that surgery. It's not like it slowly got worse, like it strictured over with time, it was just like that immediately. It sounds like what you're experiencing is very similar.

Financially, I wish I could give some options but I don't know, besides maybe asking your vet if they have any sort of payment plan? I've seen a few people on here who have been able to get this through their vet - unfortunately I wasn't able to and had to pay an arm and a leg for all this. There are also loans you can get to help with unexpected surgeries, so that is something to look into.

I know how horribly stressful this situation is, thinking the surgery will fix everything and it doing nothing. But don't give up hope - I have seen people on here with kitties who have similiar symptoms that have resolved without another surgery. If you can, perhaps you can go to another vet for a 2nd opinion on the matter. If possible, I recommend a board certified specialist (you'll need a referral but just ask your current vet). Although it's not cheap, it will be cheaper in the end to go there than go from vet to vet.

I so hope your kitty ends up getting better.

Since he has a history of blocking, he may have already been on a special diet to diminish the blockages.
If so, ask vet before changing him to wet food. Wet food will be better because it keeps him hydrated and peeing and helps keep his mineral concentrations down. Yet if he is on a special urinary diet, the new wet food should be one of the few that helps maintain the same urine PH and has the other benefits of his urinary diet.
Ask his Vet if it is better to use distilled water, rather than filtered water. Filtered, bottled and tap water will have some of the minerals that make up crystals. Distilled (like we use in steam irons) should lack the minerals. The difference is very small, yet it may help and is only about 99 cents per gallon.

My boy had the pu surgery back in October, he really couldn't pee right after for about a month and he would only go pee on a cat bed in the living room. Each time he peed it was only a small amount each time. I think it was because his urethra was still sore and raw. I also think it because he wasn't use to peeing like a "girl" so it took him a little bit to free comfortable again to pee.

My boy had also been catheterized three times in a month so he really didn't get to heal from that before he had the pu surgery. I spent a small for fortune on my boy it was close to 7,000(thank god for my dad helping me pay for it) by the time it was all done and said. That was with time staying at a vet for 5 days with a catheter, then the night that I got him home he blocked again and I had to rush him to an emergency vet, where they kept him for 3 days and cathed him again and then did a surgery where they went into his bladder to remove all the "slime" of stones and mucus. He came home and was fine for about two weeks then he blocked again and that was another trip to a emergency vet, thank god they didn't charge me for them to manual unblock him and they sent him home with me and told me to find some place to get the pu surgery done.

I would defently maybe go to a second vet if he doesn't start peeing again thought. I went to a second vet after a week after Gotham had the surgery cause it didn't look like it was healing right on the outside. She said it looked fine and I asked her about him not peeing as much and she did say that was a little normal after a surgery like this She also told me that they really don't have a sphincter to control when they have to go that he might dripple around the house for a while tell he get use to his new anatomy. I can tell you right now it takes a while for them to heal from this surgery.

The way I think about it is imagine you had to go though the same time I bet it would take you a while to feel comfortable going to the bathroom and you would have to re learn how to go to the bathroom cause you were so use to going one way and now you have to do it another way.

I would defiantly try to listen to your gut cause you know your cat better then anyone else and if you feel like something is wrong then I would diffidently make another appointment with another vet just to give you some piece of mind for you and your wife.

Hi again! Regarding my post number 5 above, refer to bear bear post 7, which is a more accurate description of things for your situation :)

Hopping your guy is doing better. It is not a cheap surgery to have and it is a very invasive surgery for kitty. I would not give him any hard food at all. To many carbs and crap in it that causes blockages. Once they have the PU surgery they can still get stones it just makes it easier for them to pass. So you still need to manage that for your kitty. Wet food has way more water in it which they need. It needs to be a pate and nothing with a gravy. We use Friskies pate and it is about the cheapest and our cats due well on it. There is tons of info on the Internet on foods etc.
if your guy is still having problems I would get him in to a specialist. I know they cost more but could be cheaper in long run. Not many vets are competent in doing the PUs. When my daughter did that with her cat they had a payment plan you could use. I think she only had to pay like $50 a month. Believe it was based on income level. Hope all goes well. Prayers.
