I am looking for opinions, experience, words of encouragement...
The past few weeks my 7 month old, Charlotte, will pant after play. Sometimes it's after very vigorous play and sometimes all you have to do is show her the ball. She LOVES to play fetch and would do it for hours if I'd let her. I knew the panting was not normal and scheduled an appointment with out vet yesterday (Oct 31). Charlotte is extremely aggressive so she has to go in the "happy kitty box" (gas sedation) for just routine visits. Vet proceeded to sedate her and gave her a thorough check up. She said she detected a slight murmur. She explained that it was a grade 1 and it was positional. Meaning when she shifted her, she couldn't hear the murmur anymore. It was very faint and difficult to detect. She decided to go ahead and take an X-ray while she was sedated. She showed the X-ray and explained that the heart should measure between 6-8 (relative to the spine) and Charlotte was sitting right on an 8. Still normal but the high end of normal.
Based on the results HCM was tossed around very mildly. She said she isn't sure the size is anything to be concerned about yet, she's still growing, or if the murmur was due to the sedation or not. So to be safe, we have called in a cardiologist for next Tuesday to get an ultrasound and make a definitive diagnosis.
A little history. Charlotte was abandoned at 2 weeks old. She had a respiratory and eye infection which she received antibiotics for. She has been on various antibiotics for several different things at least 5 times in her short 7 months. She was just spayed on Oct 3rd which she went through extremely well. During the spay she also had her bladder looked at for some issues there. Bladder was found to be fine. No issues at all with the spay. Very surprising considering she reacted very poorly with each vaccine and required an extended vaccine schedule with a minimum of 2 weeks between each shot. She has been tested twice for FIV/FELV and both were negative. She eats like a horse and plays like a dog. HARD. She is the baby of the family and dearly loved. This possible diagnosis is terrifying and devastating quite honestly.
