Playing or for real?

I see my cat and my new cat (rescue) laying together, they seemed to be fine. Once I came downstairs and found them fighting but not violently? No hissing though. After a bit the rescue ran off and my cat sat down, I came up to him and he wasn't aggrovated at all, usually after he fought my eldest cat he would run off from me. He was calm this time. The rescue is very shy but very kind. Has not bit me or scratched me even once. And all he wants is to be friends. Is it play fighting or real?

It sounds like play to me - wrestling I will bet. If it had been fighting it would have been loud, fur would be flying and one or the other would have run off when they separated. Sounds like these two will be great friends.
