There's a chance they could catch a claw or hurt their pads on the mesh while covering the deposit in the box.
You could fill the outside boxes with sand or earth. I keep a small patch of earth well dug over so the soil is soft and mine use that area because it's easy for them to dig. I clean it every time its been used.
