Phenotypes

I know this will probably require a lengthy answer, so I apologize in advance.

Could you please explain phenotypes, what they do etc...

I've read descriptions on the net and I just can't get my head around it, if that makes sense..

Actually, this one is easy!
The phenotype is simply what you see when you look at an individual. So it doesn't DO anything. It's the GENOtype that does things as it is the total complement of genes that an individual has. So the action of the genotype produces the phenotype.
We can't see the genotype, we have to use the phenotype to clue us in to the individual's genes, and you all know what problems that can cause!
