I worked for a retired couple once who I dogsat for and worked in their yard planting various things. They were having backyard relandscaped, and were creating a section dedicated to their prior pets. They had over the years many different stones of their lost dogs, cats, and even a bunny in the mix. Each time they lost an animal they had for a long time or had a quick stint in life they had a stone made and then immediately got a new pet. Now one of their dogs who I sat for now resides permanently in the garden.
When I lose a pet now, I immediately put the animal in the ground and place a stone on top. I make sure I put their name on the stone near a new plant. I then get a new pet similar to the animal that is lost and give it a similar name. I will always have a dog and a cat in my house. They are part of my home. I know they can't live forever, but their spirits will.
