Have you tried any of the prescription foods in an attempt to get the stool firm and solid and then working to reintroduce some of his regular food? That might help you figure out which food is causing the issue.

I don't have much to go on but I did have stool issue with my kitten Coconut. However, it came with some mild vomiting. I originally had him on Hills Science diet (since that is what I've fed all my cats and the woman I got him from neglected to give me a bit of the food he was currently on even after I asked.

Anyways, I took him to the vet and his checkup was completely normal. They sent us home with some "Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Gastrointestinal High Energy in gel canned cat food" Feline Gastrointestinal High Energy™ in Gel Canned Cat Food - Royal Canin

We had him on that for a week or 2 and slowly weaned back to dry Science Diet. That did the trick for us. Hope this helps.

Yes. My vet gave me Rayne's Sensitive GI wet food to try, and Rollo had the same reaction to it that he seems to be having with every other food: cycles of normal stool for a few days, then a day or two of soft stool/diarrhea. :(

I've also tried a different protein for a few weeks (rabbit, at great cost!) and while initially the results were promising, he's back to the usual stool cycle. :(

Once I have enough saved up, I'm going to bring him to a cat specialist. My usual vet is absolutely stumped. She's at least told me that whatever is causing this doesn't seem to be affecting his health otherwise; he's growing at a good rate, has a healthy coat, and his blood tests have come back fine.

What has worked (and, fingers crossed, is currently working) for me is: adding about a 1/4 teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree to the food. Make sure the only ingredient in the can is pumpkin. Then, sprinkle a little forti flora.

When I got my kittens from a rescuer I had the same issue for both. Ended up feeding them Wellness pate kitten (chicken--not the core), mixed in with a few kernels of Orijen Cat & Kitten dry--plus the pumpkin and forti flora. It was the only thing that worked.

Currently both of mine recently had another bout of diarrhea--I'm pretty sure it was brought on after I feed them some pure bits freeze dried chicken snacks. Fingers crossed, the pumpkin forti flora combo is working (Huey--the younger cat just pooped and they were normal; Gomez the older one who has a much more sensitive tummy hasn't pooped yet).

Btw, both of mine are now on Fancy Feast Turkey Kitten + orijen (I had also added in some Cats in the Kitchen Chicken Frick a Zee which they love but will only slowly add it back in after the diarrhea is gone).

Hope this helps.

nerdgirl5 nerdgirl5 I have tried adding probiotics and pumpkin to Rollo’s food and they have unfortunately had no effect. :( Thank you for the suggestion, though!

I’ve made an appointment to get a second opinion from another vet. I’m hoping that she won’t recommend tons of expensive testing; money is tight at the moment. :(

Hi Misprints Misprints

Gee, I'm really sorry to hear that. I think a second opinion is a good idea. Please keep us posted and yes, I really hope this doesn't involve a lot of expensive testing.

One other suggestion--that your current vet might have done--sometimes when vets test for parasites, there are some parasites (like Giardia) that they don't test for (that happened with Huey, my other kitten when he was still with the rescuers). Those are pretty inexpensive fecal tests.

Either way, hope you get to the bottom of it and glad, at least, it's not effecting Rollo's health, otherwise.

Just a little update!

I've been feeding Rollo some limited ingredient canned foods (Hounds & Gatos Rabbit pate and KOHA Turkey Pate) and he seems to be doing very well on them so far! I suspect that he might have a sensitivity to chicken; I'll continue feeding him these two foods for a bit and see if the soft stool returns.

I do intend to transition him to a raw food diet, but I don't want to change his diet again so soon.
