Anyone have any recommendations for an outdoor cat and bird deterrent that actually works?

Kind of a broad based and generic question. Maybe more information world help. Not sure why it needs to be solar powered. Are you looking to keep all cats, birds, etc. out of your yard? Probably not possible, but motion activated sprinklers might do the trick for most unwanted critters.
