Oreo went in for a neuter, ended up staying two days, and returned looking like this:

He didn't have any of this before he went in. His feet and claws also had damage. He also has a weird scar on his belly that wasn't there before. It looks to be sutured closed, with hair trapped in it and everything. What is it?

I am not happy with how he returned. The shelter does have a very poor rating, though. I'll book him to see the vet, but in the meantime, what can I do for his scabby face and what on earth is that'd stomach scar?

I'm not sure what the stomach scar is normally a vet will shave any area that needs to be cut open. For now I would keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get infected.

But I'm also not sure what you are talking about in the first picture? Can you post a picture of him from before you took him in so we can see the difference?

See all those scabs and brown scabby bits and missing hair? He didn't look like that before I admitted him. What on earth happened to him? I'm very upset about it. He has two thick black scabs on his chin.

His belly wound. When I yank the hair up a tad, I can see something light do blue. I can't tell if its glue, or sutures, or whatever... But it IS a wound and it wasn't there before he went in.

I have a cat I had to buy a special kennal carrier for because as soon as the door shuts he rubbed is nose on the cage door until the fur was gone and his nose was bloody. It only took him 5 minutes to do it. I don't know what would cause scabs on his chin.
You said he so I assume he was neutered? Maybe he had an undecended testical that they had to do an abominal incision to get to the testical? Seems like they would have told you that and discusssed how to care for incision. With shelters and feral cat clinics around here they tattoo the incision with a blue or green line so if cat returns or goes to a vet they can idenify the cat has been spayed. I would be upset at his condition also.

Okay that thing is probably the blue tattoo then. But he's male... He wasn't spayed, he was neutered. His adoption form says SPAYED though, which is kinda silly? But he was neutered. He had both of his testicles fully descended and now they're both gone and he has wee wounds on that area and no fur where they shaved it. Not bothered about that, bothered about how awful his face looks and also his feet and whatnot.

That is strange that it says spayed. I would also be upset about his face and paws also. I haved worked spay/neuter clinics and none of the babies went away with anything like this. Might not hurt to call the manager of the clinic and send pics so they can investigate how they are treated during their time there.

This shelter has a 2 star rating and has had it for 15+ years. They are notorious for poor conditions. Nothing will be done. Now its my task to ensure he's okay. I'll be taking him to the vet soon next week and hopefully he'll heal from this and be fine. As you see, the surgery says FELINE SPAY when he's a male. I do see the tattoo thing, saw it before but didn't know what it meant.

Oreo looks worse and I'm beginning to think he has something else going on. The scabbing on his face isn't normal. There's lots of hair loss and it looks different from just regular wounds. I'm worried that it is mange. If it is, I may have to get rid of Oreo. I have other pets and there are immuno-compromised people here and I just can't deal with treating mange right now.

His coat is generally thin and not so great looking. Tomorrow I will be scheduling a vet visit and they will take a look, but what do you think? He doesn't seem itchy, though. He was playing with my dog Nigredo this morning and I really don't want him to catch anything because I can't afford to treat them all for mange. Is there a point in trying to keep Oreo separate at this point? He's always with the dog and the dog seems fine so far. Idk what to do now.

I am sorry you haven't had any replies to your question before now @mjfromga  , I think maybe your second post makes it look to others that you have had some adice already.

Did you manage to contact your vet?

Some of my outside cats had something similar that was apparently a small mite that they caught either from the hen that lives in the yard or the quail that come looking for food. My vet said that I could try diatamaceious (sp) earth but prior to that, I applied FrontlinePlus to 2 of the cats and they cleared up. Unfortunately, the wild ferals couldn't be treated like that but when the cool weather came, they cleared up. My feed store now carries the diatamaceous earth so I will give it a go if the problem returns later this summer.  My dog never caught it - it comes from poultry and game birds but dogs aren't susceptible. Sending prayers and vibes that your crew stays clear as well for Oreo's return to good health
