I'm having a problem with my 6-7 month old kitten. She attempts to nurse rather frequently. This could be while I'm watching television, but it's mostly when I'm trying to sleep. Alot of times she seems sleepy herself and tries to nurse on my neck, inner thigh, or inner elbow. I adopted her from a shelter so there is a good chance she was weened early. Is there something I can do to keep her from waking me up by nursing? Right now I put her in the bathroom over night, but I hate keeping her locked up every single night. Any suggestions?

Also wish to say hello, just stumbled upon this forum. Just what I was looking for.

A number of us have cats who do this - my Ellie is one, and she is now a year old. I have tried everything I can think of to stop her and she still goes for it any chance she gets. Some people say it is because of early weaning, but in her case that was not so - she was with her mom till 11 weeks. Some cats seem to grow out of it eventually, but Ellie certainly has not lessened inher behaviour, and goes for visitors as well as me - my cat sitter htis summer ended up with 'lovebite' marks up her arms after three weeks of Ellie! I wish I could offer some advice, but you are not alone! The only positive hting to say is that they do it because they love us and we represent security.

Sarah...you may want to look at the posts that come up below:

They may have suggestions of things to try.

My little Bob, who is now 5 1/2 months old (was a bottle-fed baby) has the habit of getting into bed with me every night, finding the fleshy part of my palm (no matter how I try to hide my hands) and suckles away.

I've been told to try some citrus lotion on my arms & hands (a moisturizer)...that cats hate citrus and this will discourage the suckling.

I have a little boy Oliver who suckles his sisters' ears. Poor girls wake up with soaking wet ears. I have started applying Bitter Apple to the outside of the ears prior to bedtime. I know that this behavior is because Olie got such a rocky start. No mom to speak of, runt of the litter, almost died, couldn't stand up on his own for the longest time. But even the bitter apple doesn't deter him, so I give him snugglekittie to suck on instead. Riley, another kitten that was traumatized suckles the dog's chest.
