We found this little darling a couple of weeks ago by our church. We initially thought it was a boy because most orange tabbies are male. The following week, after getting daily water and almost daily food (we didn't put wet food out unless we actually saw her), the kitty was relaxed and we realized that HE is a SHE.
The poor thing was skin and bones a couple of weeks ago -- I guess the combination of nursing and the Texas heat took its toll on her -- so we decided to fatten her up a little before we TNR her and her kitten(s). I thought I had seen a small kitten -- maybe 4 weeks old? -- the first week, but haven't seen the kitten since. This week, she has gotten comfortable enough with me to let me pet her and handle her a little. Her teats are not swollen now, and I still haven't seen a kitten anywhere.
My questions are:
1) Do you suppose that something has happened to the kitten, since her teats indicate that she's probably not still nursing?
2) Since she's not engorged (and she's put on some weight), it is safe to get her spayed now?
