No doubt this isn't a new topic, but I was wondering if anyone has any advice.

We have an adult cat, we've had him for about 18 months, and until about 4 or 5 months ago he was fine at night.

Recently, though, he seems to want to go in and out several times during the night. If you ignore him he gets destructive: if he's inside, he claws the carpet until you get up to let him out; if he's outside, he will claw holes in the window screen - the screen is virtually useless now.

Because we live in a rental, we cannot put in a cat door, and the window doors are far too expensive.

Any ideas, it's driving us up the wall!

Nothing to do but block the carpet and window screen depending on whether he's in or out. He's been taught by you waiting till he's made a ruckus for a while before letting him in or out, that if he is persistent he will get what he wants.

Is he fed right before you go to sleep? Maybe if you do that it will help him sleep through the night.

We had problems when we added the second cat to our household years ago.
They fought for the place between us in the bed and kept us awake. We finally had to banish them from the bedroom. We put them in the utility room at night with their litterbox and water. Then they clawed the door. My husband installed a sheet of plexiglass from just below the doorknob to the bottom of the door. Of course, they couldn't do that and the problem was solved. Have you a room where you might confine the cat in a similiar manner.
