So for those of you who haven't read a post from me before- HELLO. I'm Cassidy, 21 years old. My boyfriend and I have been and are attempting to TNR all of the strays/ferals in our neighborhood and his mom's neighborhood- and have fixed an awful lot of kitties in the last two years.
And we have a new comer! A black and white long haired male was eating my food two days ago. We've seen him before, but only a quick glimpse of him. This time he must have been SO hungry, because when I opened my door he didn't even move. He allowed me to scratch his butt for maybe 10 seconds while he was eating [which is why I know he is an UN-NEUTERED BOY], but after that he took off. He also had a couple scratches and bite marks on his right ear. I brought out a little wet food instead of kibble and gave that to him too, but he wouldn't let me come near him and kept taking off to the back of the yard under the pomegranate tree [where I find a lot of the strays/ferals hanging out.]
The past two nights he's been sleeping on our pile of blankets we have for the strays/ferals outside. When we walk up to the door, he'll just look up and stare at you.
I do have a trap, but i've never used it before. I've been fortunate enough to get the strays/ferals just by getting them used to me with treats [I swear they are all strays. I don't think any purely feral cat would ever let me get as close to them as these cats do. Our neighborhood is sadly the designated area in town for dropping off unwanted pets.]
My main concerns are that I have seen a raccoon and an opossum, who come at night and eat the little leftovers of kibble. Are they dangerous? Will they try to fight the strays?
The raccoon comes around more often, and seems harmless- he pays no attention to the cats from what i've seen and is solely interested in the food. [He's pretty cute if I do say so myself, last night he was watching me intently as I watched him. I backed away from the door where he couldn't see me and he came right up and stood on his hind legs to look through the door window to see if I was still there. Hehehe.]
And what if I catch a stray in the trap during the night, is that going to leave it vulnerable to attack from one of the two animals? And what should I do if I wake up and instead of a cat I have one of those two in there?
