Hi all. My son and his fiancée are working on introducing a 3 and a half month old kitten to their 13 month old resident kitty. All seems well, no hissing or bad noises, etc, and last night they had kitten out in living area on couch, resident kitty slowly approached on couch and sat next to, they were in same proximity for about 2 hours...resident cat ate treats, baby was uninterested...no problems. Today, brought them together again, and while baby walking around resident cat takes a few swipes...not mean, no hair up, no ears back, just a couple swats, no nails....thoughts? Is this normal? No chasing, no hissing, no growling, nothing. They separated them and playing with each separately now. Thoughts?

Yes it's normal that they would try to 'play' together.  Often playing looks like fighting to humans.  If his claws were retracted it is likely he was just testing the waters to play. Your kids should just watch out, at least at first, due to what I assume is a large size difference, but other than that, as long as neither of them seem distressed, it is definitely normal they'd want to play- they are both young and will have lots of energy!
