The Savannah also showed up as a search result, as well as the Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Ragdoll and Pixie-Bob. The day after Christmas, my husband and I were walking around town when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw what I mistook for a black cocker spaniel sitting on someone's stoop. When my husband exclaimed, "My God, look at the size of that cat!", I stopped and took a closer look. We were trying to figure out if the cat was a Maine Coon or a Norwegian Forest Cat when a man came out of the house. When asked, he said it was a Siberian cat, was from eastern Germany (we live in southwestern Germany), and weighed 26 lbs. It's not a new breed, but was virtually unknown in the West until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Maybe your friend was talking about a Siberian? They're still fairly rare in Western Europe, and perhaps aren't yet, or have only recently been, recognized as a breed in North America. This cat was huge, with semi-long, slightly wavy hair, completely black, with yellow eyes.Originally posted by Lorie D.
I wonder if your friend was talking about Savannah cats? They are a new breed that was developed by breeding African Servals with domestic cats, and they are larger than regular domestic cats. Click on this link for more information about them. http://www.afrikhan.net/whatis.htm

There was an Urban Legend going around some time ago about an 89lb cat. This by chance would not be what your friend might have heard about?
Here's a link (it's a fake..)
Dog sized cat
That lady that claimed to be the owner of the Serval wasn't. The cat was stolen from somewhere in Kelowna. They are gaining more popularity since this happened. There is a breeder in Nanaimo asking $2800 per kitten. I would love to own one, but my yard is to small for such a big cat!Originally posted by Gus's Mom
Could it be a Servel cat? They are gaining popularity here in British Columbia, one was just "rescued" from a homeless woman, her and the cat were living out of her car.
