We live in a townhouse and the lady across the street let's her cats out and they venture to my windows where my two cats are inside. The only two times my cats have fought was when the cat came to the window and it agitated Oscar and he went after Ellie.

So does anyone have a safe way to keep the cats off my yard?

Do I take coffee grinds and make a barrier around?

I know it's hard to get every path they may take.

If you have a sill on the outside of your windows, lay a strip clear carpet protector, little nub side up, on the sill. If not put a piece directly under your window, big enough to cover the area that they would jump from. The nubs, hurt their feet (but not damage them) and they won't venture there anymore. You could also sprinkle some cat repellent around the window area too.

I don't know anything about coffee grounds being effective for deterring a cat, but if you placed them on a window sill they could stain the surface. If the carpet protector doesn't work, you can try chicken wire. If you don't typically have the windows open, you can also buy opaque window film to cover at least the bottom part of the glass. That might be just enough to minimize interest in the cat coming to look in the windows.

Motion activated sprinkler in front of the window or wherever they are coming into your yard.

Hi
Although realizing that every cat is different as mentioned above, this is from Belapets .com
"smells like citrus, rosemary, or even pepper are excellent cat deterrents."

Cinnamon kept my seedlings safe from critters last year. It also work on "tasty" trash for several months with my kittens. Now I think the smell tells them there is something like meat packaging in the trash.

This is interesting. So the predominant theory here is that your two indoor cats started fighting because there was an outdoor cat outside the window?

Can anyone explain why this could be a possibility?

My guess is pent up frustration at not being able to gain access to the intruder? That’s only based on watching a cat watch a bird through a window though.

It's called redirected aggression and to borrow Margot Lane's words, when a cat becomes upset about territorial infringement but can't do anything about the intruder directly, the pent up frustration explodes, sometimes even at a human walking by at the wrong time.
