About 6 years ago, I lost a cat to a fibrosarcoma secondary to rabies vaccine. From that point on, I have stepped back from getting the vaccine (despite requirement by state) as I no longer wanted to take the risk and because my cats are strictly indoor cats. After getting a new vet a year ago, I was advised of the non-adjuvenant vaccine by Merial, which does not contain the chemicals that are believed to cause the excessive inflammation leading to the cancer. Based on their recommendation, I elected to have the vaccine 2 1/2 weeks ago for one of my cats. Within 9 days, I noticed his right rear paw was swollen and shortly thereafter, his entire right leg was swollen...twice the size of the left leg. I noted a small lump behind his knee. We immediately went for an evaluation. Temperature normal, eating, drinking, urinating, defecating. Advised no signs of infection. No sprain/fractures. I was told this was the side where injection was given. I was also advised there were two enlarged lymph nodes in his leg. She aspirated both, checked under microscope and advised cells were questionable. The slides were sent to pathology for further review. (I must note that the day he got the vaccine, I also had a blood panel done as this is a 13 year old cat----WBC normal). She suspects possible lymphoma. I am awaiting results at this time. Prior to this injection, he had no issues. Of course, these vaccines are meant to trigger an immune response, but it appears my cat's is out of control. All they could do was put him on steroids for the inflammation and wait for the pathology report. Has anyone had (or know of anyone who has had) a similar experience after the Merial Non-adjuvenant (not sure of spelling) rabies vaccine, and if so, what was the end result? It was hard enough losing one cat due to a rabies vaccines and I cannot bear to lose a second....all because I was trying to give my cats good care. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

You don't get lymphoma in one day. If this is really lymphoma, it was there before and came to attention because of the swelling due to the vaccine. I know you are worried, but sometimes inflammation can look like leukemia or lymphoma, so it's best to wait and see. I hope that's all it is. Do let us know, please.

Thank you for your response. I realize you don't get lymphoma that quick, but was confused as complete blood panel just prior to vaccine was all good. I guess I'm just paranoid and freaking out cause he was fine before this. Perhaps I should focus on positive and if it is, in fact, lymphoma, we've caught it early and will hopefully give me more time with him with proper treatment. Thank you.

I can understand perfectly that you are paranoid. It must all seem like a bad dream. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for your kitty. :)

You can still have cancer and have normal blood work results. Localized swelling is common after vaccination. In fact one of my horses will have her entire neck swell to the point of being unable to lower her head- this typically subsides in a week.

Delayed reactions to vaccinations can also occur- one horse did not present with swelling until 4 days after being vaccinated.

My opinion is that this would not be cancer, just a delayed response to the vaccines. Provided the swelling goes away in a few days.

i often do not vaccinate against rabies either- just keep in mind, if your cat bites or scratches someone, they will take all your cats for quarantine... A mostly low risk for indoor cats. Horses are not required to be vaccinated against rabies at all and they live outside.

Thank you for your response. I understand delayed responses, but it was 9 days before I noticed the swelling, which increased significantly overnight, encompassing his entire leg, from paw to hip. Been on the steroids for two days now and am hoping to see swelling start to subside. On another note, I had horses for many years and like you, we weren't required to vaccinate them for rabies.

Indeed, it does and I wish the nightmare ends soon.

I have 2 persians and stopped the rabies shots after my male had a seizure after getting a shot, and my female 2 months later got one and she just fell down while walking one day and it took her 5 minutes to get back up, she was like a limp rag... no seizure but just couldn't walk. That was 10 years ago and my cats are 15 yrs now. Only problem is that since I moved to Florida the only way I can get them groomed without having the rabies shot every year is to have them sedated and groomed at the groomer at my vet's office. So I've started giving them baths and grooming the best I can... don't do as good as a groomer but oh well.

Scheduled biopsy but subsequently cancelled as he became ill with vomiting and diarrhea. Was back to normal the following day....this cat has a history of anxiety disorder (which he had when I rescued him) and believe that may have been cause as was confined to a room. Once allow to roam, he straightened out. Continued to eat, drink, defecate and urinate, but subsequently noted the other rear paw and leg began to swell. Cat had been on prednisone since March for a mild asthma so decided not to go ahead with biopsy...may get false reading. As of yesterday, his right front paw began to swell. He continues on buprenex for pain and the prednisone. Will be returneing to vet this afternoon to discuss further and consider a hospice care plan. Not sure where to go from here and am still not convinced it is lymphoma (but I tend to overthink things and am grasping at false hope, I'm afraid.) My heart is breaking and i feel helpless. Am going to suggest trying CBD oil as have heard some have had positive results. Perhaps consider a holistic vet, but am told it may be too late. (shame on me, so many feelings of guilt).

Hi Scootercat.

In post #1 above - almost 2 weeks ago - you said

What was the pathologist's opinion/assessment of those samples?

I have a feeling you're 'overthinking' things, too......you're talking about 'hospice care' when you don't even have a diagnosis.

Now, I'm not being critical here.......I've been in this kind of 'boat' myself. I'll tell you that, in retrospect, I was at my most vulnerable point when, after having provided hospice care to two cats over an extended period of time, I was faced with a non-specific diagnosis in a third very sick cat........this was not the time to make unplanned spur-of-the-moment and irreversible decisions.

So, my own advice: slow it down; get the diagnostics done - a second opinion with an experienced feline Veterinarian/specialist would be a must; make no quick decisions, at the very least, give yourself some time for careful consideration. And, do continue to share the unfolding story here....there are enough well-informed people here to offer experience and feedback.

Now, look here.....not once have you mentioned his name, much less shown us a picture! This must not continue.....

The pathology report for the lymph aspiration indicates large cell lymphoma. I was going to have a tissue biopsy done, however, it was cancelled as he became sick that day. Also, because he had been on steroids for several months (for asthma which was diagnosed in March), advised would have to go off them for awhile prior to doing the biopsy. He continues to eat good. After vet visit today, was advised the enlarged nodes originally detected don't appear to be getting larger, however, he now has swelling in the other hind leg and the lower front right leg/paw. He remains on the prednisone and buprenex. I inquired about CBD oil as I have read that some have had positive results with its use. Has anyone on this site ever used it? I know you can order on-line, but I am not confident just picking a site and ordering it...without knowledge of a reliable/reputable source.

Oh, note to White Shadow.....Cat is a Siamese cat named Simba, that I rescued 10 years ago from the Siamese Cat Rescue in Virginia. He had a sad, early life before being rescued and I've spent a lot of time working with him over the years. He grew into a beautiful, loving meezer. I've since rescued three more from them. Still have two, one is deceased from chronic kidney disease.

OK, so that lays out where the thinking of lymphoma comes from.

I believe that the best advice and information will come from the specialized online community of people who are dealing with lymphoma in their cats. They've been active online since 1998 - that's 20 years of collective experience with every aspect of dealing with this disease. They'll be up-to-date on the latest treatments and any clinical trials that may be available.

If you're interested, you'll find them here: Feline_Lymphoma Caregivers They also have a website (though I think its construction was stalled, and so may not be 'current') - that's here: http://felinelymphoma.org/cms/

If I were in your position now, I'd certainly be putting the facts I had before that group. I'm confident I would receive good information and 'advice' on options from those folks' experiences. I mean, I know I'd be a 'wreck' and be in need of good counsel.

That group uses email as their operating platform - my recommendation is to get a new, separate email account dedicated for that group - that will help you manage the back and forth postings (Yahoo works well).

So, he's Simba....would that be he in your avatar picture? It sounds like he has come a long way with you since those awful early days. (We'd never refuse more pictures, you know!)

Keep us up to date too, as you go forward with all this.

Sadly, Simba was put to rest yesterday, in the comforts of his home and in my arms. Lymphoma was just too aggressive and not a lot we could do. Despite regular exams, including 4 since March due to his recent diagnosis of asthma, the cancer was not picked up (normal bloodwork is not an indicator) and once diagnosed, it grew quickly. Once he stopped eating and drinking, and despite sub q fluids and B-12 injections, he just couldn't eat and I just had to let go...He was such a beautiful boy and my heart is breaking, but, I know, in time, I'll be able to focus on the love he gave me.

I am so sorry about Simba. He was beautiful and I’m sure he had a wonderful life with you. And at the end of it, you gave him the greatest gift of all, even though your own heart was breaking. I’ll light a candle for him this evening.
