Best thing I do for this is scoop it out and dispose of it in the trash outside. That works when a cat gets the runs.

Any kind of spray or deoderizer just makes it smell like a skunk in the perfume department. Yuck.
I do that immediately as well.

I had thrown out every single air freshner, scented candles, plug ins and even potpurri- changed my household cleaners and detergent to free & clear after my Graycie developed a congestion that's " inconclusive" after many many tests and radiology specialists ( I still blame the Feliway diffusers)..... long story short I bought this if I detect any odor( on rare occasion) - one squirt and everything smells like vanilla( I love vanilla fragrance though)

Pet safe? I don't really know for certain how pet safe it truly is even though Chewy advertises ....I don't really believe ANY aerosol is safe period

If the smell is that bad, I would consider adding a probiotic and/or digestive enzyme to their food and see how they do with that. They might be stressed from the move, new home, etc. :) Are you feeding them the same thing they were eating at the shelter?

I have an appointment for their first wellness check tomorrow bright and early. I do have envelopes of Flora in the house, but will wait until she can do fecals on the 2 cats.
Their appetites are great, but their poo odor is lethal as it is being expelled and with no odor in the box!? I scoop right after.
I don;t mean to be overly gross with TMI, but it is like the all natural runny peanut butter that has to be stirred before using.
Meanwhile my hair is turning gray because my tenant downstairs will be disturbed at 3 am every day with a Dump of Doom :cloudy:and the felines are happy as Larry!
I hope to get a resolution tomorrow as to the root of the problem..if that is the way they are going to poop their whole life, then I cannot keep them and will have to return them.

My 2 cats have some disgusting smelling poo! They are very careful to cover it up and I scoop immediately. But during the 'go' the smell is overpowering and hangs in the air for quite a while.
Are there any suggestions out there for a SPRAY air freshener that is non toxic to cats and are pleasant to smell..not a double whammy bathroom spray power level? I know some of you cat moms and dads have suggestions out there. Thanks for any help. . cough cough,gag,gag:barfgreen::help:
I use AOE (animal odor eliminator) it it safe to spray on pets and I use it as an air freshener as well. I find that it helps with the smell very well! I also think it smells really good.

My cats have stinky poopies too and living in a small house it can really linger. I use my favorite essential oil (rose hip) diluted with water and spray it around, helps A LOT!!!

Yeh. I am hearing there are a lot with that problem.
I had none of that whatsoever with my senior cat who had ckd. Perhaps it was because she drank tons of water, I dunno. These young-uns drink no whater whatsoever except what I add to their wet food.
I guess my senior cat spoiled me in so many ways..3am Zoomies being another on the list!

SUMMARY thanks to all for posting suggestions
Here are the products I used to clear the AIR of lingering odor for after my cat pooped with a smelly case of diarrhea.
Best:
AOE 👍
Amazon.com
has a pleasant herb smell that lingers briefly, but clears the AIR of any odors. I also tried it on some day old fish papers I had to take out and they worked on that smell as well. Good thing is, after a few minutes there is no smell from the bad odors OR the spray!
Leaves no watery dampness on the floor when sprayed in the air

Runner up:
ODOR Xit MAGIC
Amazon.com
Has a pleasant smell, but it lingers and can remind one of a convalescent bedroom with much use. Can be sprayed in the air and erases odors. I like this one as well, but the lingering scent, although light, can be annoying. I will be using this as well as the AOE.

Third Place:
Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Basil
Amazon.com
This is ok and I would use it occasionally in the kitchen or for other general area like the bathroom.
The basil smell lingers, does not eradicate, just covers up and the basil scent got to me because it lasts a long time in the air.
Just a matter of taste.
Didn't do what I wanted it to do which was clear and not just cover up. I grow a lot of basil plants and I have yet to find a variety that smells like this spray!!

EPIC FAIL 👎👎👎👎👎👎
PET ODOR EXTERMINATOR FURRY TAILS
This is so STRONG smelling. It reminds me of strong stale PERFUME gone bad from the 60's!
One tiny spray will knock both you and the cats out! Just TRY to get the smell of the spray out..impossible!
I will be using it to wash out my outdoor garbage bins this summer . It will keep ANY flies or rodents at bay!
You may want to avoid this one.

(also tried was Pooph which I had on hand. It is good on SURFACES ONLY and leaves water on the floor if sprayed in the air. Can be sprayed on top of the litter after scooping. It is not meant to be used as an air purifier)

…and you know, I think you were right about the Basil. It DOES tend to mask rather than eliminate. I may have been coming at it more from the predicament of trying to find a deodorizer that wouldn’t harm the cat. (And actually, he seemed to like the basil). Also it sounds as if his poos were less stinky. I think the probiotics idea might be a good one, and glad you liked the AOE….this is a great reference for everybody, thanks for starting this thread. …I wonder if there are reverse fans out there, like something that would suck in the air rather than blow it around?

I sometimes place a towerfan in front of the window, but at night I just have the windows cracked. Days like today withmore than a hint of spring in the air all windows are open and everything seems so fresh!! Noproblem until they chow down in a few hours. But hot summer weather is coming and a/c does not leave roomfor open windows . I guess I will cross that bridge when the time comes.
