Since New Years day our cat has had done something to his tail, we assumed that he got it stuck in something and had to pull it out with force causing the cut.

Since then we have been monitoring it and it doesn't seem to have gotten any better and often drips of something. He wont let anyone near it and licks it for long periods of times often, but other than that he seems himself.

His tail seems to thin all around with the marks all round (which is why we thought he got it stuck), any advice on what this could've been exactly and what we should do about it? Thanks.

Poor baby! For starters and until you can get him to the vet, put an E-collar on him so he can't continue licking and dab some regular original neosporin ointment on the sore.

Since you noticed this on New Years Day, it could be a result of over-grooming due to stress from loud New Years Eve celebrations. Another possibility is an allergic reaction to flea bites. These are just two of the more common issues that will cause a cat to obsessively groom to the point of self-mutilation, but regardless, have your vet take a look.
