My guess is that the raccoon probably struggled and got out. Their teeth and forelegs are very strong and they easily chew through regular chicken wire and sometimes even stock wire to get at chickens. When a coyote or other predator attacks a raccoon, there is a LOT of commotion, very loud and intense screaming that wakes up every dog in the county. A lot of the fur probably scraped off in the escape. I believe that it would take a bear or mountain lion to get a raccoon out of a trap.
