I certainly hope that someone would at least let me see the cat, were mine to go missing- what if the scenario were reversed? What could it possibly hurt to help someone with piece of mind?

I think the first thing i'd think is. What motivation would someone have to call and claim a cat that's not theirs, send pictures, and post on facebook without saying anything if they didn't truly believe it was their cat?

If they come over and say it is what motivation would they have to claim it is?

I think it's probably not their cat, but they are right. I don't think they have malicious intent, just that their cat went missing around the same time period. Show them the cat and you will know for sure. If he doesn't greet them or let him pet them, then there's your answer.

On the flip side.. You could just let them have him thinking he's their cat and they'd never have to go through the trauma of losing their old cat.
