Shirley was having an operation for hyperthyroidism, and the doctor amde a mistake with the anesthesia. She stopped breathing and they couldnt revive her.
My heart is broken.

You nursing her back to health is why you feel such a strong bond with her, and yes you could have avoided the surgery, but there were reasons, good reasons, why you went through with it. While she might have been good with taking her pills, I am sure it was uncomfortable for her, and hard on her digestive system. You wanted to have the surgery to make her happy and most important HEALTHY. You were not having some unneccasary cosmetic surgery, she did need the surgery. While her condition was not life threatning now, who knows how bad it could have gotten, and all she needed was a simple surgery. While it was a mistake, it was not at all stupid. I hate that they have to put my evil Chichi under just to trim her nails. She is 16 and they have starting growing really long and imbedding in her pads. While this could be avoided by me grabbing her, hurting us both, holding her down and trying to do it myself, it is soo much less stressfull on both of us to have her relaxed. Now if anything would go wrong during this simple procedure I would too, beat myself up second guessing my decisions, but we make them for the best intrest of our furry friends. You loved Shirley very much, and she knows that. She is a free spirit now, running, playing and laying in the warm heavenly sunshine. RIP sweet girl.Originally Posted by CrazyCatnipper
Thank you. I've just been sitting here crying all afternoon. I loved her so much. She was a sick little orphan cat when I found her, and I nursed her back to health. This operation was supposed to make her 100% better, so she wouldn't have to take any medication anymore. The doctor told me when I dropped her off that there was almost no risk, and even reassured me about the anesthesia when I was concerned about it.
I feel guilty and selfish, since she could have lived for years with just the medication. This operation was optional to stop us from having to give her 3 pills a day.
People, don't believe the doctors when they say there is no risk to the operations they do. There is always a risk, and there's no turning back the clock when something goes wrong.
I have to live with this forever, but other's can avoid the stupid mistake I made. If it's optional, don't do it. Your precious kitty's life is at stake.
I agree there is no way to know long term what her life would have been like. You can't explain to them why they have to take pills 3 times a day. You were wonderful to take her in & nurse her back to health. All we can do is give them love for the time they are with us & you obviously did that. I volunteer at a shelter & I tell you what a good home, good food & lots of love is all they ask and you went above & beyond. Remember that and know you did the best you could. I'm so sorry for your loss.Originally Posted by chichismom

I totally and completely agree with Chichi'sMom! Feeling anger and guilt are natural parts of the grief process. But you did not cause the death of your cat! A sound medical decision was made, and it sounds like it was simply a mistake that happened during what should have been a straight-forward surgery. Unfortunately, while we all make mistakes sometimes, in the medical field it can cost a life.Originally Posted by chichismom
