This was in the Marin IJ newspaper and is my favorite of all in 15 years!
How it is: The night a boy's dream crept in on little cat feet

IT WAS 1969 and Barney, our oldest child, was 4 years old. He was old enough to want a pet, and young enough to hear, "No, you can't have a pet until you can take care of it."
"But Mom, I promise I will."
"Honey, you need to be a little older before we can think about it."
Of course, it didn't help that so many kids his age already had pets. But living in a small house with a husband who had just started a business and a daughter in diapers, I had my hands already full.
