I started a new campaign in Rome: Total War around the middle of last year and got away from it for a while. It's actually a mod for the game called RTR. I started playing it again the other day (I've been off work sick) and am having a tough go of it. I'm playing as the Parthians. I control a little more than a 1/3 of the game map and have wiped out the Bactrians, Armenians, the Ptolemaic Empire, and the Sarmatians. I have an on again/off again truce with the Macedonians. My only ally is Rome and they are off doing their own thing on the other side of the map.
Pontus is a HUGE thorn in my side. They have sliced a nice wedge into my budding empire. I don't have the heavier infantry units to stand toe-to-toe on the battlefield with them. I need better troops. I'm also strapped for cash.
I may have to adopt a strategy that I use in Medieval 2 :Total War when those pesky Mongols and Timurids show up: Give up territory while I build my forces. Spread them out, wear them down and then go for the kill. It's a long term strategy that doesn't always pay off. In the meantime I could strike West into North Africa and attack Carthage or I could continue to build my forces in Egypt and set to sea and attack the main Pontic cities.
Decisions, decisions.
