My cats think I am a grocery store

I can free feed my cats. There are bowls of food all over the house, one in each room (at least). But they; won't eat out of the bowls. They all come to me and stare at me until I feed them - not in a bowl, but on the floor (or bed, or whatever flat surface is there. They act as if they can't find the food unless I give it to them directly.

This times 5 can be a bit wearying. Anyone had a similar situation?

Mine used to be like that. Still is, to some extent. Won't eat unless I sit next to him and point at his bowl. Now I just need to sit next to him for the initial meal. It seems he doesn't check the bowl after he finishes and I washed. If I put down food while he isn't around, it'll sit there and rot. If I sit next to him while he eats, he can come back later to finish the rest.
