I've had Bailey for about 2 1/2 years (and she's probably 5 or 6 years old now). She has always been a timid cat, very wary of new situations. She loves being picked up and petted, but won't sit on a lap. To get to my shoulder when I am sitting on the couch, she has to leap up on the arm, to the back and then down to my shoulder.
She has been especially fearful of the bedroom. She will sit outside the door, staring at me in bed, but wouldn't come in. Or, if I picked her up and sat on the bed with her, as soon as I let go, she fled. I put her basket outside the door so she could keep watch.
In the last month or so, she started sleeping at the foot of my bed. Sometime during the night, she will run down the hallway, leap on the bed, and settle in at the bottom corner nearest the door. She sleeps with her two front paws hanging over the end of the bottom rail, for a quick getaway. But she finally got to the point where, if I got up, she would even stay there alone.
Today I had a headache, and went back to bed. I heard her meow, then jump on the bed. But this time, she didn't stop at the foot, she walked all the way up the side of the bed, over pillows and a duvet which usually really scare her, and plunked herself down beside me. But that wasn't good enough, she climbed right on top of me, and settled in to sleep curled up on my chest.
I am so proud of her, that was a first! My theory is that she has watched Sam do that every night, and finally had the nerve to try it herself.
Now, I just have to teach her that her butt shouldn't be in my face.
