We have a sunroom that is closed off so I've been using that as the kitten room. Over the past couple of weeks I've been opening the door to allow them to start to explore the house and 'meet' the dog. None have done more than look at the dog from across the room, and 'luckily' for the kittens, our dog is afraid of our livingroom floor, so he won't chase them.
The thing I've noticed, though, is when they're in their room, and especially during their 'tired' time of day, I can go in, easily pick up the kittens, pet them, hold them (though they won't lap sit if they can help it), and they're really quite tame. But when they're out in the main house, they act very skittish and hide under things if you try to get them. Pretty much the best way to get them back to their room then is to feed them.
My question is, at SOME point they're going to be comfortable in the entire house, right? They are just acting this way because it's a new place out here? Or might they always act scared out here? Is it possible they will NEVER warm up to the dog?
We have a new stray that came around recently who must have had more contact with dogs and people and maybe also just has a more laid-back personality. This one has already done a nose-to-nose with our dog and will actually come up to me when I come around. Do you think that the feral kittens will 'learn' from seeing the new kitten being more comfortable?
These guys are all around 4 months old or so. And as of today, all of them are fixed. Yes, I have FIVE kittens in my house!
