Tonight we put down our 13 year old cat. He went fast and peacefully at home thanks to a visiting vet.
So hard to even write about him. I need to write something though.
He was born in this house July 2000. He was Molly's second baby. The first was stillborn. I remember as if it was yesterday. Molly was trying to get #1 to move. She kept cleaning him. When Spunky was born she was cleaning her first. I had to clean Spunky's airway. Tonight I held my hand on his chest as he passed.
I am so mad there was no warning. No obvious sign this was coming. Cello is under treatment for IBD. HE was going through a spell of not eating very much. Sometime during that week, Spunky had stopped eating. It took a few days for us to realize. He ate breakfast with my husband and dinner with Mom. We were so busy that we didn't compare notes immediately.
We had the vet come for a visit. He was jaundice and dehydrated. Few nights later after syringe feeding him he took a spell. Honestly don't know if it was aspiration or a seizure. It's all a guess. He spent 5 days at the ER. He had U/S, blood work, and a biopsy. Everything indicated Fatty liver. The visiting vet still felt there was a tumor somewhere. We agreed that an MRI would be too stressful and wouldn't cure whatever is found. He came home with a feeding tube. He was starting to perk up. Last night he had a spell. He just collapsed, stopped breathing with his tongue out. I scooped him to his paws and kept rubbing his back. He was coughing up food. It took 30mins for him to recover. We thought last night was the end.
This am he was alert and breathing normally. My husband saw him walk around the bed to adjust. After this mornings feeding he took another spell. This was short and he recovered immediately. I did notice his 3rd eyelid was more prominent. The Er wanted to do an X-Ray but agreed to hold off one more day since the visiting vet was do in the AM. They advised flushing his tube at least 15mins after a feeding. Everything went fine. An hour later he took another bad spell. We thought he was going. He urinated too.
We made the decision and called the visiting vet. He did have fluid in his lungs. Heart was sounding ok. She really thought it was a seizure and he has a brain tumor. We let him go. He had no quality of life. Nothing was getting better. He might have been lifting his head a bit more but that's it.
The others hissed. Typical after a vet visit etc. Today they didn't. They smelled him, stared and walked off. Almost like a good bye.
Mom is a mess. 3 cats in two years.
Not much to say right. Sadly this is how it goes. He was an adorable fluffy cat with beautiful green eyes. He was Molly's son, Lucky's adoptive son, and Cello's best friend. He was starting to bond with Benson finally.
We know he is happy over the Rainbow Bridge and meeting up with Connor & Princess once again.
