Meeko's surgery was friday morning and it was really rough. It took twice as long as expected because he was way worse than we thought. Thankfully that specialist really knew his stuff because against all odds my little boy made it threw!

He's home right now but we have to take him back tomorrow. We wanted to see if his recovery would be easier at home, but hes having a really hard time and I think he would be better off having 24hr care from a nurse that knew his symptoms and what to expect better. Were going to have a key to the back of the office so that we can see him after hours if he's in the visiting room. I feel like a terrible Mommy leaving him there, but I'm doing what I hope is the right thing. His recovery is very complex and these first few weeks are critical. I think I should have refused the offer to bring him home. I'm not a vet and I've had to call 6 times today. they didn't mind at all, but hes gotten worse since being at home and a nurse even had to come over to give him a shot.

Another bit of sad news. Meeko's vet predicts that Meeko's lifespan is cut in half because of the damage the worms did. His intestines were torn up so bad that the vet and specialist are both wondering if it was just worms that did this or if he survived a poisoning. (honestly, they both said that it looks like he survived a poisoning, but they can't be 100%) No mater what it was the worms didn't help. He's had worms probably since kittenhood until now and the vet is guessing that he's 5 years old, not 3 as we were told. This poor baby has a long road to go and he didn't get a very fair start at life. My Clemi cat was poisoned a year ago and I can't understand why ppl are so damn cruel. It's just a cat for crying out loud! why do ppl feel the need to poison a little helpless creature. >.< Poor Meeks!

On a side note, is it normal for an older cat to get protective of a younger male that they hated prior to surgery? You can't remove Monty from the door of the bedroom that Meeks is in and when my brother went in to check him out Monty attacked him. He's like that with everyone but me. I can come and go as I please, but if my brother or fiance try to go in to Meeko, Monty goes attack cat. Monty was abused by males as a kitten, but my guys love him to pieces and have never laid a hand to him other than for petting or giving treats. He was doing really well with the guys before this. Now he's seriously regressed. Do you think he could think one of my guys did this to Meeko? If so, how to I show him that they are fine?

OMG I'm so sorry Meeko is going through all of this. If your instincts are telling you to leave him at the vet for the best care, than do it! You're not leaving him, your making sure he's being taken care of, and getting the best care!

People hurt animals because nothing is done to them for doing it. Oh they may get a little slap on the wrist and told not to do it again, but they don't get any real punishment. Then they move on to to children.

I know, it's just nuts!!! I have full faith in this vet and I think that if Meeko's going to pull threw it will be because of this vet. My fingers are crossed, but I'm still scared about it.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww, I am so sorry all of you are having to go through this
, but it sounds to me like you've got an amazing vet, and Meeko couldn't be in better hands. I think you're making the right decision. It's a trade-off for Meeko stress-wise, but to err on the side of caution is always the right decision.

Mega for his complete, successful recovery!

I don't know about Monty. I will say... our usually not-friendly-to-cat kitties were always very accepting of sick rescues. I think it's why we never had too many problems integrating newbies.
I think it's possible he's feeling protective - and you may well be right about the past abuse issues. I have no suggestions. Maybe PM hissy, I think she has a lot of experience with abused kitties.

Oh honey I am sorry you are going through this, but glad Meek is in such good hands... he is so very lucky to have found you

I think it's a good plan to bring him back to the vet for a little while for his recovery, just while he in in such a critical condition... don't feel bad - you are just doing what is better for him...
About Monty... It is instinctive in cats to attack sick cats - while we can not say this is what is happening for sure, this might be very well what is going on... In multi-cat homes, this is actually one sign that a cat is sick - when you notice a cat being attacked all of the sudden, a vet visit of that attacked cat might be in order... Just something to keep in mind; it might be Monty's instincts showing through.
Tons of vibes for Meeko and hugs to you

Thanks! I feel a bit better now about leaving him there. It will stink leaving him there, but at least he's getting the care he needs.

Carolina, I think you misunderstood me a little
Monty is being very overprotective of Meeko. He refuses to let the guys into the room that Meeko is in and when he gets in there Monty doesn't attack Meeko, he cleans him!

It's a bit weird because before Meeko went into surgery Monty hated him. He'd ohiss at him and throw a fit if he got to close, but now after the surgery Monty's gotten like a guard cat. He wont let the guys in the room. I'm wondering if his prior abuse from males is triggering his instincts to protect the other kitty in the house regardless of the fact that he usually doesn't care for him.

They are snuggling a bit now. Meeko is purring and he has his head on Montys bum.... I know that kitties usually attack sick cats so this is just bizarre to be. It's nice to see them getting along, but still. They kinda despised each other before the surgery. Who knew that this would solve the aggression issues. lol

Meeko has really been through a lot, hasn't he. Sounds like you found the best vet you could find for him, and he's got Meeko on the right track now. Poor thing! But, also, if Meeko did live through a poisoning, and/or worms for all these years, then he is certainly a survivor! Sending tons of healthy, healing vibes for Meeko. Get better, Meeko!!

About Monty: I agree with everyone else about cats sensing when cats are sick. My experience with my own cats has been similar to Monty and Meeko.

When I took Victoria in,
she passed away last winter, anyway, when I took her in, she was not sickly, just homeless. Pirate and Grace
passed away in July--anyway, they both really gave Victoria a hard time of it. They occasionally always did pick on Victoria from then on.

But, when I took Lucky Lee in, he was very sickly, skinny, and had cancer, thyroid disease. He looked as bad as he probably felt. But, Pirate and Grace, the two terrorizers, left Lucky alone. Pirate is the patriarch, been with me much longer than any of my kitties, and Grace was his follower. I'm sure they knew Lucky was sick.

It is so precious that Monty is Meeko's caretaker of sorts now. I try not to equate to human behavior, but it's hard not to think that they act like siblings, who while normally fight each other, are also there for each other when the chips are down.

Whatever the case, I'm sure it warms your heart to witness this new tenderness!

I'll keep holding good thoughts and prayers for Meeko. And kudos to your vet!

(sorry so long winded)

Just tons of vibes to you and your family - and hoping Meeko does keep beating the odds. I agree that Monty is just reacting to some prior abuse from males - I don't think your guys should take it personally at all, as hard as that is, but try to redouble their efforts to prove to Monty that not all human males are literally bad guys. I know it'll be stressful for all of them.

And, I think you're doing the right thing - no matter how we love our babies, most of us don't have all the extensive knowledge and training to lend advanced 24 hour, ER-room type care. Your vet sounds great and very aware of your feelings and needs as well.

And, no, I don't know why some humans feel the need to abuse - but families like yours make me feel some better about humans in general. Please keep us posted - I'll try to look as much as I can.

Some cats are natural nurses and it sounds like Monty is one of those. Monty will miss his patient, but it is better for Meeko to be in the hospital where he can get the special expert care he needs. Hopefully he willl come home again soon.
