My 16 yr old tux has hurt her back hip and/or back. It was a week ago. We’ve been to the vets twice and are waiting to book her in for an X-ray. She was given buponorphine but she has a strange reaction to it. She stops sleeping and paces the room. But it did seem to ease her pain. Gabapentin does the same and metacam isn’t touching the pain. The vet said that’s the three choices! What can we do?

Ask about butorphanol. Have you thought about CBD oil? What about steroids/anti-inflammatories in lieu of or in addition to one of the pain meds? Either could help reduce inflammation and that might be part of the problem.

Steroids can do wonders in the short run, I've used them with Hekitty, for 10 days, with good effect.

She’s in pain and I don’t know what to do. The vets can’t X-ray her until the 11th April. She’s just laying around staring and not even sleeping. I’m crying my eyes out as I don’t know how to help her

I don't understand why the vet cannot try something else to help with her pain, regardless of when the x-ray can be done. Can't you find another vet to consult? Any vet who wouldn't want to try to do something to help her NOW is NOT one I would want to use. Why won't they try other treatments such as the anti-inflammatories or even a steroid shot to help get her through the time while she waits to get an x-ray done.

Any neighbors/friends/family/co-workers that could recommend another vet? All of your cat's records are yours for free and could be shared with another vet to help them get the caught up on her issues.

They’ve given her gabapentin and buponorphine. She was already taking metacam. She’s got hip dysplasia so they clearly think it’s that. But they can’t just expect her to be in pain for two weeks. She’s not sleeping

Do you have a heating pad that she could lie on? Wrap it in several layers of toweling so that it doesn't get too hot. I keep one on my bed for my girl, who is getting arthritic, and it helps. She love her warms.

Do you have any ER Vet clinics, or Vet hospitals,...that you can take her to?
They would be more expensive, but they may have Specialists on staff, who could be called in.
You wouldn't have to wait so long for an x-ray, either.

Definitely think about seeing another Vet, since waiting 2 weeks, in pain, just sounds awful.
Like FeebysOwner mentioned, there are other drugs that can be given, and tried...steroids, especially reduce pain very quickly, but they depend on her health history, too.

The Buprenorphine reaction you mentioned is very common.
It's in the opioid group, that can cause being very wired, pacing and walking about, large pupils and prolonged reactions that cause a cat not to be able to relax and sleep.
Gabapentin usually doesn't cause this type of reaction.

How are you giving the medications? With food.
Are they liquid, or in pill form?
Can you give less of them, by cutting them in half, or reducing the dosages?

I would honestly try to get her in faster, to see someone else.
Tell the regular Vet that it's an emergency, if you have to, and that your cat cannot walk.
Sometimes, telling some little white lies, even if not always right, is not so wrong, either.
You can always say, that she suddenly started to walk, again. (idk. I would consider doing it.)
How are you supposed to know what is wrong with her, without an x-ray, and more work up tests.
Good Luck to you, and mega Health Vibes for your cat.
