Male cat has pee around his fur after using litterbox

Hi there,

I have a male ragdoll under 1 year old, we've noticed lately that after he goes to pee, his penis/pee area is wet with urine after. He doesn't urinate outside the box, and he's had consistent sized urine clumps. He has an uncovered little box with World's best cat litter ~2inches deep that we scoop multiple times a day. I'm tired of wiping him and giving him baths in that it stresses him out every time I have to do it. I've given him a sanitary trim, but even the like half cm of fur left still gets pee on it. I'm calling the vet as well, but it doesn't seem to be a UTI or crystal issue since he's peeing fine, just messily? Anyone have any solutions? He also tracks little wet spots of pee and litter occasionally that I find after it dries as a little patch on the floor, don't know if it's related.

Thanks!!!

All that comes to mind in this case is that being a Ragdoll, he does have a lot of hair in that area, and even though you have given him a sanitary clip, if he digs to the bottom of the pan, which is possible if you only have 2" of litter in there, his penis and scrotum are actually sitting in the bottom of the pan when he pees, rather than in some litter that would absorb it.  You did mention you have a "little" box and Ragdolls are BIG cats.  I would suggest you get a large, high-sided box and put a LOT of litter in it, so that when he digs a hole to pee in, he will not be  actually peeing on the bottom of the box but will only be halfway down in the litter.  Then it should be soaked up enough by the litter so he won't be so wet.  Of course if he was fastidious and cleaned himself right afterwards, you would never notice anything, so perhaps he has not yet mastered Litterbox 101 completely.  The 4 1/2 week old kitten I am fostering has this problem, but he only just learned how to use the box.  I am just about to set up a larger box for him now that he's big enough to get into a deeper box.

Good luck with your guy and let us know how getting a larger, deeper litter box works for him.

Hi there! Oops, that was a typo haha, I meant 'litter' not 'little'. We've had varying levels of litter before, and this pee on fur thing is a recent thing, but I will definitely try to have more litter in there. Thanks!

I just read a post from a couple years ago. Their cat was doing the same thing, and they were using world's best. My cat, half ragdoll and 5 months, has been doing this, too. And, we use worlds best! Coincidence??? And same thing, everything about him is consistent so I'm not worried about his health. He goes to the vet in a couple of days anyway, but I think I may try a new litter.

New litter is fine, just make sure you have more than just 2" in there.  He should be able to dig a hole deep enough so he can squat over it and not have any of his parts touching the bottom of the box.

I am having the same issue. My male cat is a little less than a year old and just over the last few weeks some times he comes out of the litter box wet. He is a digger so we bought a new bigger litter box with a hood thinking this would solve it, but it hasn’t, still the same problem.

Did your situation resolve?
Did you make any changes that may help my situation?

We are also experiencing the same issue. Our details are similar to a previous poster... Male ragdoll using World's Best Litter.
This does not happen every time he uses the litter box. I think it happens mostly when he goes for a longer pee.
I've noticed that he seems to squat very low over his litter and it seems like he sometimes pees faster than the litter can absorb.
Perhaps a different litter? I'm curious to find out if anyone has found a solution.

Thanks!

I replaced his liter box with an extra large one that is very deep. I haven’t had the issue since. Hope this helps!

Is your cat an adult, and has he dug a hole in the past?
It sounds a little crazy, but with kittens who are learning, I place them in the box and "dig" in it myself with my fingers (clean litter of course!) This seems to make them start digging around.
What type of litter are you using?

I had this exact issue and solved it, so wanted to share! My male ragdoll kitten would always have wet genitals after he peed because he was squatting too low onto the litter, and would get messy. I tried tofu litter and regular clumping litter, but what solved things was the Breeze litter system. It's basically non clumping litter that drains onto a wee wee pad and I cannot express how over the moon I was that it worked! I have been trying things for the past year with no luck, so wanted to share.
