I had to put Lucy my 5 years old orange tabby down last Friday. Lucy was FIV positive and she had no health issues till 6 month ago. It started with acting different and when I get close to her she will hide from me. When she tried to eat dry food she had problems swallow the dry food and spit it out. She cleared her throat alot and her meow vocal totally was changed and it was a lot deeper. Lucy does not like wet food. I took her to the vet and they really could not figure out what is wrong with her but with X-ray it was some inflammation in her throat area. Gave some antibiotics but she still having problem swallowing dry food. I got her used to wet food with mixing it with some baby food which she loved. Few months passed and she got real bad left ear infection. Vet gave her some treatment but at the same time we noticed that she losing her balance and noticed her left side of her face was paralyzed. Her left eye not blinking her left ears not moving and left side of her tongue curled up. At that time the vet told me to go see a specialist for MRI try find out if tumor or anything else caused that. With Covid-19 and laid off work I could not afford spend couple of thousand dollars on MRI. A month or so passed by and her balance improved and she was eating fine but then last Saturday she quit eating and I noticed thick discharge from her nose. Looked like upper raspitory infection. Took her back to doctor and they gave her more antibiotic and look like it was getting better but she still not eating . The doctor gave me some ointment drug you put in ear tip to help with brain to make her eat but no luck. She was hungry and she asks for food, she went to her food bowl but that was it. I syringe feed her for 4 days 8-10 times a day to see maybe the infection goes away and she will start eating but no luck. She was losing weight rapidly so this last Friday after 12 visit to the vet for the last 6 month she was tired and she wanted to end.
On this Friday I took her to the vet and I knew she won’t come back home, it is a horrible feeling. I spent a lot of time with her the night before and the day we put her down. The strangest part that I still can’t figure it why that the last two days and nights she followed me everywhere and on my lap all the time. She used to hang around on top my bed with my other cats but she never came to bed at night when I was sleeping. The last two nights she slept next to me till I woke up in the morning. Maybe she knew it was the time.
I still was not giving up and I did not want to lose her so I asked the vet if anything else can be done and she said no.
I knew it was the time and she went to sleep peacefully. We still don’t know exactly what caused all this problems but after she went to sleep the vet open her mouth and we saw on the left side of her throat a lump or tumor kind of yellowish color and a lot of thick grey build up in her mouth. The vet thought that 6 months ago it started from throat area tumor got bigger and worse and spread to other part of her face. I did my best for her and I honestly I don’t think she suffered at anytime, she might have had some pains sometimes but I was trying to the best to make her get better and i still think she wanted that too but I think the last week we both lost hope. I was very close to her and I am very sad that she is gone but she is in better place and we will meet each other soon. I will miss you RIP my Lucy
