Hi! This is my first post here! Quite surprising since we have been rescuing cats for at least 12 years! We were parents to up to 10 cats at a time... We have 7 now.
Anyhow, would really appreciate some suggestions in the case of one of our cats. His name is Milford. He is approximately 10 years old and does not go outside.
He was a little lethargic and eating very little so after a few days, I took him to the vet. The blood work revealed a possible infection to the bile ducts. His TBIL was under 10 (normal 63) and PLT was over 300 (normal 108), amongst other things.
His kidneys are fine, he pees properly and he does not throw up.
The vet offered some xrays as an option, which I declined. He prescribed some antibiotics, anti inflammatories, appetite stimulant and subcutaneous fluids. We have been doing all of this since Tuesday. We have also started to force feed him , but that is difficult so the cat doesn't get that much but it's better than nothing. He has not started to eat on his own.
I also gave him some Nutri Cal, which is a high calorie paste for cats that are recovering.
So we are doing all of this, and he is not throwing it up, but doesn't seem to be getting much better.
I guess we will have to go back to the vet, although the antibiotics are for 2 weeks and we are not there yet. It is extremely difficult to give him the medication (except for fluids); we have been scratched and bitten and it is quite exhausting for us to do twice a day and traumatizing for the cat.
We have a newborn (the human kind :-) ) to take care of as well as other childen, so we have a lot on our plate.
I had declined the xray because the vet thought it could be only an infection, so treat and see. But perhaps we need to see if anything else is going on, like a blockage of the ducts. The thing that throws me off is that he is not vomiting... Would 't he, if there was a blockage?
Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
