My 13 year old baby boy went to the emergency animal hospital on Saturday for fluid buildup in his abdomen. They ran all the tests. His heart, liver and kidneys are fine. The vet concluded that he must have cancer. They drained the fluid and said the only thing we can do going forward is drain the fluid again if it builds back up.

I'm looking for ways to decrease water retention and I understand low sodium, low phosphorous canned food would be the best. I don't have faith in prescription pet foods as they contain a lot of junk ingredients. Does anyone know of a high end brand of cat food (that isn't pate because he won't eat that), which is low in sodium and phosphorous?

Did the vet recommend a low sodium and low phosphorus cat food or at least say your kitty needs that?

Phosphorus certainly is the main thing to worry about in food for a cat with CKD. I know nothing about the effects sodium has on the kidneys, but watching it in CKD cats is never a bad idea.
