I foster cats for a local rescue. Yesterday the decision was made to put one of the cats to sleep. After weeks of work, it was discovered he had an extremely high white blood cell count in everything imaginable. Operating was the only option to find out the cause, but weight less than 2kg it was felt he would survive the operation or recovery time. So I book his appointment for that evening. No sooner as I had done that one of the 4 week old kittens who was being cared for by a surrogate mum took her last breath too. She had been the smallest and had not had the greatest of starts. I took all the remaining litter to vets for a check up and we are hopeful the rest are well. However the ginger boy who was put to sleep has a brother who I also foster. He now has to have the same test to check if he has the same condition.
I honestly want to quit the fostering now. I feel I have failed them.
