We found Gizmo when he was approximately 4 weeks old and currently he's about 4 months old. I had to take him to the vet this morning for a sanitary cut (he has really long pantaloons compared to the rest of him) and so I took the opportunity to ask about when I should bring him in for neutering. They said they prefer to neuter kittens when they're over 5 lbs and when they're at least 5 1/2 to 6 months old. Gizmo is currently 5.96 lbs so that part isn't an issue but it's still a bit of a wait regarding his age.
Anyway, I was in his safe room with him just a bit earlier and for the first time in a while he was just satisfied seeming in my lap. Normally, he'll let me hold him but not for very long and once he's down on the ground it's play mode. So I wanted to encourage his being happy while being held. He was content enough to wash himself sitting on me and I rubbed his ears and cheeks and forehead. Then I carried him with me to the door so I could open the door before setting him down. He's gotten very fast so it's easier this way to prevent escape. When I set him down, I noticed his penis was poking out.
So I'm wondering is that a sign he should be neutered sooner? Is something like that normal? I can understand being worried about the weight because of anesthesia but does the age really matter that much? I also don't want to neuter him early if it endangers his health but at the same time I'm concerned about the possible upcoming behavioral issues that come with his maturation.
