My long haired snowshoe has been getting weird sores and lips that he scratches opens around his lip and they are very painful for him, my mom won't take him to the vet so idk if they're serious or not
we actually do use plastic bowls, and i will suggest all of this to my mom thank you c:I'm not sure what it is but it really needs to be looked at by a vet. If you had a mystery itchy sore on your chin, I'm pretty sure your Mom would schedule an appointment with the doctor for you to be seen and treated If cost is a concern, look into low cost vet clinics in your area instead of a full service vet hopsital / clinic / office. Can you offer to help pay for part of the vet bill?
You can try to keep the area clean in the meantime with water and a towel or a pet grooming wipe. Don't use anythng else, especially not Human OTC skin ointments and creams which can be harmful to a cat. Do you use plastic bowls for your cat? Some cats are allergic to plastic and may develop feline acne and small sores around their mouths and chins. Stainless steel or glass bowls are preferred. You can even use disposable paper bowls and plates.
he has been getting them for about three or four months now, they started out really small and almost unnoticeable but now they're very large and painful for himHow long has your cat been getting these sores or since starting to see the hair loss around his lips?
I share LTS3's thoughts about possible allergy but things like this really are best being looked at by a vet to make sure. Also, as long as he is being bothered by what ever is going on he is likely to continue scratching and things won't have a chance to heal, so in the interests of avoiding something getting more serious try to persuade your mom that seeing a vet sooner rather than later could save money.
If you don't have a glass or steel bowl you can use for him to feed / drink from you can always see if there is an old china / ceramic saucer or shallow bowl your mom would be prepared to let him use. They would be fine too.
