My cats love the laser pointer too. I read stuff about rewarding them for "catching" their "prey", so after any kind of chase game, I give them treats. I think I am being silly, but it just made sense to me, if they are hunting, they should be rewarded with tasty treats.
I thought I was tricking them, thinking that the red dot was some strange insect. Sam chased it for about 5 minutes, the first time I tried it out. And when I turned it off, he came over to me, sniffed at the pointer in my hand, and batted at it to make me turn it on again. They stare at the pointer, then look to see where it's shining to find the red dot. So, they are smarter than I gave them credit for.
