My Ragdoll was born with only one kidney. Maybelline is 12 years old now and very healthy however she has always drank an enormous amount of water. My vet had prescribed that I only give her cat food meant for senior cats to avoid protein overload. I must be doing okay since she is doing well.

Water helps the kidneys remove waste from the body. (As far as I know teehee)

I feel like it would be normal as the body only has one kidney opposed to two, it has to work a little harder which would have the kitty drink more water to help.

I am however no vet! This may be a good question to give your vet a ring for, just to ask if that's a normal thing.

I'm not certain about this but I think there is some debate about whether restricting protein intake is actually good for those with kidney diseases. It could potentially be harmful, especially when you have a kitten that is growing. If I were you I would try to consult with a second vet that has a good understanding of feline nutrition.
