we just purchased a grinder for our raw chicken we feed to ourcat colony and are starting to feed our 3 inside/outside cats as well.

the grinder works great as long as the chicken leg/thigh peices are cut small enough to get down the grinder throat.

we tried using kitchen sissors but wow, when you are doing 20 lbs of chicken it wears you out.

any suggestions on what to use?

A big knife. You can get a decent one for about $20-$30 just about anywhere that sells knives. And whack away! But I also use kitchen shears.

If you are good with a knife, a heavy chef's knife or better yet, a cleaver. If you are insecure, use poutlry shears, much stronger and more leverage than kitchen shears.

don't waste good steel cutting through bone. a good meat cleaver is all you need. for the bones that are particularly thick a wooden mallet or meat hammer is a plus.

the problem is not that we are trying to cut through the bone....its' that the joints are so tough and thick that even heavy duty kitchen sissors can't do the job.

I wonder what a good source of bone shears might be...thinking they could cut through the joint

its easier to break the joint by hand than to cut through it.
