A friend has an adult cat who has developed an itching problem. He overgrooms and is miserable all the time. They have tried some king of lime dip. A vet put the cat of steroids for about two weeks. That helped some. The itching came back when the medicine ran out. The cat eats a dried cat food from the grocery store. She is wondering what to try next. Has anyone dealt with this problem.

Possible allergy to something in the food? Many grocery store brands are poor quality. A better quality food may help, particularly a LID novel protein food. A food trial has to be done for at least 13 weeks if not longer. Will the cat eat canned food?

Hi. Is this an indoor/outdoor cat? In addition to possible food allergies (which can arise any time), it could also be due to environmental allergies - outdoor and/or indoor. New carpeting, furniture, bedding; changes in litter, laundry detergent, flea treatment, lawn care products, etc. might contain something that the cat is/has become allergic to. So, if there has been any environmental changes that would coincide around the time the itching started that could also be the cause.

Is the itching all over, or concentrated to specific areas?

The food allergy theory might the easiest to start with, but other possibilities need to be considered as well.

Yes, he is an indoor/outdoor cat. You have given me some suggestions I can pass on to her. Thank you. He itches all over.
