Italics

Stupid question, I know, but I can't figure out how to turn off italics after I turn them on. It seems like I should just hit the italics button again when I'm done, but it just stays on...what am I doing wrong?

I noticed today I had to hit the italics several times, on, then off on off and it finally went back to normal text.
