Click on the members name under their picture. a little box will appear and one line says 'start a conversation'. That is private. If you have problems come back!

I am using a mobile so dont know if you are looking at the same screen as me.
Tap on the envelope at top right hand side. Tap on start a new conversation and put in persons name you want to message. Hope this helps.

If you click on a member's username you will get a popup box that will give you the option to "Start a conversation".
