Is there a "DogSite"?

Hi. I've been here nearly 15 years - asking questions and getting answers about my many kitties. (I'm a cat person) But I also have a doggy - and have questions, particularly about nutrition and how to hopefully get her off apoquel for paw licking.

Does anyone know of a good place to ask these questions? I consider myself very lucky to have found this site back in the day.

Hi! What kind of dog do you have? There are some breed specific forums with some very nice people who would probably be happy to answer your questions, and most of the people seem to be happy to help with someone with a dog that isn't of their chosen breed.
(I have Papillons, by the way!)

Oh, I wish I knew her breed. Even after doing a doggy DNA test years ago, I'm still unsure!

She's currently been switched to Pro Plan, which is marginally affordable. Apoquel, on the other hand, is not. I haven't seen her chewing much, if at all, lately.

Goldenretrieverforum.com has a nice group of very knowledgeable and serious dog people. If you go to their site and search "apoquel" you'll find several threads. A lot of people on that forum feed pro plan and recommend it as well.

Thank you! I will check out the site.. You are SPOT ON with chow and golden, and there was beagle, with mixed companion, terrier and herding (which was NO surprise, the way she always chased the cats, lol)

You have a beautiful puppy, too!

I'm sure you know this, but wiping down a dog's paws after they do outside every time with a cloth and warm soapy water can significantly reduce problems with environmental allergies.

I can't claim that's not a pain, but it helps.

A lot of folks here have dogs as well as cats.

I actually quit going to Dogster several years ago because they became very commercialized and allowed corporate reps to post in their community forums. They also tended to antagonize raw feeders. I just took a peek, and it looks like they have changed from a community site to more of a subscription/magazine site.

No skin off my nose, I like it here.

I have thought of doing that many times - along with diet change, that may help. We've no real idea if it's diet or environmental allergy making her lick the paws.

It seems like it might pick up a bit in the winter, which would go against the summer grass argument.

My vet mentioned sometimes foods and treats that are multi-colored can aggravate allergies, and since we've stopped the crap food (that she loved), I truly am seeing improvement.

My allergy dog always looked and felt great all spring and summer, but fall and early winter he'd rip his hair out in clumps. It was definitely seasonal/environmental, but diet seemed to help as well

Yes, many of us have or had dogs along with cats. In fact, I've been a member of a specific dog breed site for many years and they have a section for cats too.

If you're concerned about paw licking and your vet has not been able to help you may want to consider consulting a veterinary dermatology specialist. However, changing her diet would be a good place to start and go from there. BTW, your pup is absolutely adorable. What's her name?
