To me, based most particularly on the view from above him, he looks just about exactly right.

I agree, to me he looks great!!

I have a male who is almost a year and a female who is almost 9 months....both are 10 lbs but totally different body types. Binx is long and lean, and Kaia is short and stalky

Scottish are chubby cats. Mine is 1 year old and weight 6 kilos (13.2 pounds). I used to count calories since he was around 8-9 months old. He always finished his meals as a kitten and never looked hungry between them.
Anyway, Merlin used to pant too. He had pneumonia, but he panted even months after that, when he was perfectly healthy, and only stopped around 10 months old. The difference was that with pneumonia the vet could tell his lungs were abnormal during the visit, and after curing the disease they were fine.
Keep an eye on him, but I believe you can relax.
