What do I think of for an Irish Pub? Guiness beer, corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. I see dark wood and stone and very rustic. Green accepts (perhaps a creme base) with shamrocks.
I really don't have many interior shots - Here is the dining hall at Bunratty Castle - You can see the whitewashed walls, the heavy dark wood tables and wood candlesticks.
As far as plants for you kitchen, ivy would be a good choice.
I think you had the right idea by going with the cream color or a very pale yellow. There may be some technique you can use on it to make it look more like stone underneath, but that may not be necessary. You could probably achieve the look you want without it. If remember right, you have odd color countertops, don't you? Is that going to work with an Irish Pub look?
You can paint it to look like marble or stone. I once saw an episode of Trading Spaces where they carved some grooves in a countertop with a little Dremel tool to look like stones & then I think that they sponge painted them in. That technique would really give you an Irish pub feel!
I agree that light creamy colored walls & dark woodwork, along with pub accents (clock, signs, large beer mugs, etc) would be the way to go. Irish Pub Sigh Shop.
I'm working on my kitchen at the moment. It started out with my just wanting to repaint & change the wallpaper. I painted my dining/kitchen a mustardy color & decided to tile the backsplash instead of more wallpaper... but didn't get to that yet. We also put in new laminate countertop. Now, my cabinets look so shabby that I'm in the process of sanding them down (they are a golden oak stain) & I'll paint them a tan color & then antique them. After I get my ceramic tile up... I want new floors! So much for a little inexpensive spruce up job!
I did a painting technique called smooshing last yr in a bathroom. I used two shades of blue but white/cream/yellow would work. I would use the lighter color as base coat. Then (I'll look for techinque it was by Benjamin Moore) I think it was paint mixed with glaze, doing a section of wall at a time say 6x6 the top coat was painted and the cheap plastic paint tarps where applied to that painted section then crunched up/moved around and them removed. I take pic and post. It wasn't that hard.
And if you need someone to drink some beer (esp Guiness) I am just north of Appleton so I can be at your house in less than 2 hrs!!!!!
Plus there is a nice irish store in downtown Appleton.
Thank you! I think you have more patience than I do for painting! I'd love a beer drinking partner!
What's the name of the store, maybe they have a website?
I think I'm morphing this idea into more of a cottage than a pub...but maybe a little mix of both!
I would do a chair rail& beadboard where there's no cabinets and stain them dark. Also you can buy textured wallpaper, that is paintable, but comes in white. It's stone texture. it's very typical in germany anyway, and I've seen it in the US
Depends on the look you are going for. Irish Pub would obviously be more alcohol related - you could get some of the old Guinness posters and put them on the wall, display some pint glasses, etc. The cottage theme would be a bit more subtle.
Personally, I don't know if I would want my kitchen in the Pub style. We have an unfinished room over our garage that my husband eventually wants to do Pub style with a bar, pool table, etc. I think it might be more appropriate for a game room or something like that.
It's all about you though, not what we think.
What attracted you to this idea? What did you picture in your head when you decided on this theme?
The look has changed in my head slightly from pub to cottage....I'm not a gigantic drinker and the cottage idea seems more me--homey feeling like the rest of my house is.
I actually picture lace curtains, distressed wood, plants, an open-faced cabinet to display my salt and pepper shaker collection (It's small right now but I add to it when I go to flea markets, mostly odd looking antique ones) I see cream walls with green accents....I can't do wallpaper cuz my landlord makes us paint it white again before we move out and that would be a lot of work if I ever move. I could do a border or stencil. I saw this really cool dark wood distressed ladder that would be perfect, except it's $50! But it would look so cute in there. For some reason I want a bowl on the table with those round balls made out of grape vines, you know what I mean? I think those look neat....
That would be sweet! I did see picture of an Irish bar with a cat sitting on it, I wanted to bid on it on Ebay but it was like $50! Your way would be much cheaper!
